Maredudd ad Owain was king of Deheubarth and conquered Gwynedd and Powys. For most of his reign, he fought against the Viking invaders and launched raids against his Mercian neighbours. History remembers him for his habit of paying a ransom of a penny for each head of his subjects that was captured by the Vikings.
